PORT ANGELES — Police Chief Tom Riepe told business leaders Monday that sagging law enforcement funding for effective emergency dispatch services could be bolstered if voters approve a small sales tax increase.
Speaking to an audience of about 60 at the Port Angeles Chamber of Commerce’s weekly luncheon at the Port Angeles CrabHouse Restaurant, Riepe said community and law enforcement leaders fell short on selling the last proposal for a tenth of 1 percent increase to the Clallam County sales tax.
Such an increase would bring it to 8.3 percent on the dollar.
Voters shot down the proposal, which would have increased funding for the county’s criminal justice system, in the September primary election.
“I don’t think we did a very good job of selling the jail tax and the juvenile facilities tax,” Riepe told the luncheon audience.
