Port Angeles police capture dog that mauled 11-year-old

PORT ANGELES — The dog that mauled an 11-year-old boy Wednesday was captured this morning, the Port Angeles Police Department said.

The dog, a 50-pound black Labrador mix named Jack, was caught in a cage trap provided by the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society, and remains in the humane society’s custody, said Deputy Chief Brian Smith in an e-mail today.

James Sims, 11, was bitten several times on his face, hands and arms at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday while he was alone at his father’s apartment at 122 W. Fifth St., Smith said Thursday.

He was taken first to Olympic Medical Center and then transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he was reported in satisfactory condition Thursday afternoon.

His father, Matt Boyd Sims, 38, was arrested Thursday morning in downtown Port Angeles on investigation of two counts of possession of stolen motor vehicles, one count of possession of stolen property in the second degree and criminal mistreatment in the second degree — all felony charges, Smith said.

He remained in custody in the Clallam County jail Thursday night with no bail set.

“In the process of this investigation, we recovered a stolen motorcycle and a stolen van,” Smith said Thursday.

Officers captured the dog at the apartment Wednesday night, but it escaped and had been sought since.

Officers confirmed through witnesses that police, in fact, had the right dog in custody, Smith said.
