PORT ANGELES — A device resembling a pipe bomb that caused a scare in the downtown area early Friday morning was a fake, police say.
Traffic was rerouted from downtown for about two hours as officers cordoned off an area around the device.
Made of 10-inch-long PVC-like pipe with caps at both ends, the suspected bomb was wrapped in green electrical tape and appeared to have an orange fuse coming out of one end — that orange thread turned out to be a fine, bungee-type cord, State Patrol Trooper Walt Chartrand said
Chartrand was one of the bomb technicians who inspected the device.
He and Trooper Ken Przygocki took the device to an isolated gravel pit, examined and disassembled it and determined it contained no explosive materials.
Port Angeles police have no idea who left the pipe, but are continuing to investigate the incident, Detective Sgt. Erick Zappey said.
