PORT ANGELES — The large party which four Clallam Bay youths attended before their highway deaths early Saturday involved a roadblock, two arrests and several citations by law officers, Clallam County Sheriff Joe Martin confirmed Monday.
As many as 100 youthful revelers were at the party on South Alder Lane next to Morse Creek east of Port Angeles to launch spring break when the post-midnight trouble began, Martin said.
A 20-year-old Forks man was arrested after he allegedly attempted to take a sheriff’s deputy’s pistol during an altercation with the officer.
He was eventually found in a neighboring yard hiding under a blanket, Martin said.
Also among the party-goers were Clallam Bay residents John Anthony Hubble, 20, Damien Scott Anderson, 18, Erik Michael Kroeger, 18, and Cassidy James Hunter, 16.
The four friends were killed while returning from the party to Clallam Bay when a 1997 Geo Metro driven by Hubble ran off state Highway 112 and plunged into the Pysht River, landing upside down under water.
As the four left the party in the Four Seasons development, their car was stopped by a state trooper, and two of them — Kroeger and Anderson — were cited for being minors in possession of alcohol.
Hubble passed a breath-alcohol test, Trooper Brian George said Sunday, and was allowed to continue driving on the ill-fated trip toward Clallam Bay.
The trooper apparently was the last person to see them alive.
