PORT ANGELES — The defendant in a highly-publicized criminal case isn’t talking about the secret deal that resolved the case earlier this week.
“I have really no comment on the stipulation at this time,” Jay Ketchum said in a telephone interview Wednesday.
“I feel like the wart on the nose of humanity,” Ketchum, 47, added in reference to recent news coverage of the case.
The agreement was reached shortly after jury selection got under way Monday for Ketchum’s second trial on a third-degree assault charge against a sheriff’s deputy.
Ketchum’s attorney and a special prosecutor from Mason County agreed to the stipulation that resolves the case and would keep the outcome from the public.
Superior Court Judge Ken Williams has tentatively agreed to seal that stipulation, which is still being prepared.
It is scheduled to be filed by Aug. 12, at which time Williams said he will make his decision on the request to seal the document to protect the interests of people involved.
