PORT ANGELES — Parents and and grandparents of Monroe Elementary School students outlined budget alternatives to proposed school closings during a meeting Wednesday.
The meeting followed a sometimes heated public discussion Tuesday on proposed Port Angeles School District budget cuts.
“We need to put together a comprehensive list of budget cuts and present it to the district in written form,” said Patti Happe, the mother of three Monroe students and the treasurer of the Monroe Parent Teacher Organization.
“They need to see that there are alternatives and that we do not support closing any school.”
Armed with the district Budget Review Committee recommendations, enrollment charts and past district information, the group brainstormed money-saving and revenue-generating ideas for more than two hours at the school, 102 Monroe Road.
The Budget Review Committee was charged with developing recommendations to cut $1 million from the current $34.4 million budget.
Monroe parents say they are prepared to argue their cause when the meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Port Angeles library.
