PORT ANGELES — Students from the Port Angeles Christian Educators school finished second Saturday in the American Society of Civil Engineers 2002 Popsicle Stick Bridge Building Contest for Western Washington.
Students Stephen Hanes and Stephen Tutton won second-place honors after their Popsicle stick bridge supported 349 pounds during the competition in Bellevue.
The Port Angeles High School team comprising Sharon Talbot, Amanda Macomber and Nicole Donisi finished seventh in the competition.
Their bridge supported 294 pounds before collapsing.
Olympic High School won the competition with its bridge supporting 599 pounds. The team’s second entry supported 547 pounds.
Winning entries were judged on the amount of weight supported, calculations predicting the weight a Popsicle bridge could support and overall appearance.
The two teams from Port Angeles, coached by local civil engineers Gene Unger and Joe Donisi and physics teacher Derek Johnson, have been working on their bridges for approximately two months.
