PORT ANGELES — Thin oil slicks a mile long were reaching out of Port Angeles Harbor eastward toward the mouth of Morse Creek early Monday.
By afternoon, much of the slicks had been contained and cleaned, Fire Chief Dan McKeen said.
The narrow sheens were noticed in an aerial flight a day after the liquid propane gas tanker Gaz Diamond spilled about 500 gallons of oil during refueling on Sunday, the Coast Guard said.
A large portion of the oil was contained on the deck of the Panamanian-flagged ship, but about 100 gallons spilled into the harbor around 6:45 a.m. Sunday, John Felton of the Washington State Maritime Cooperative said.
The volume of oil is still largely an estimate, Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Andrew Tucci of the Puget Sound Marine Safety Office said.
The amount will be better known after the oil is cleaned up.
“We just clean it up until it’s gone,” Tucci said.
