PORT ANGELES — The Coast Guard command has reported new alleged racial incidents — including a written epithet — against a black serviceman.
The three incidents against the U.S. Coast Guardsman during the past week also have been reported to the federal Justice Department’s Community Relations Service, which will visit Port Angeles to assess the situation.
The incidents follow by a year accusations from Coast Guard personnel that some Port Angeles residents and businesses had treated them in a racist manner.
A compilation report on those incidents by the Coast Guard Port Angeles Group commander was forwarded at the time to Coast Guard brass in Seattle as well as to community leaders in Port Angeles.
The report spawned a 17-member racism task force chaired by Mayor Glenn Wiggins and made up of city, school, business and social services representatives.
In this week’s accusations e-mailed by Port Angeles Coast Guard skipper Capt. William Peterson to task force members, one of the incidents involves a racist note that is being investigated by the Police Department.
