Port Angeles mural overhaul begins

PORT ANGELES — The “Olympic Visions” mural behind the Conrad Dyar Memorial Fountain is coming off so that it can be renewed.

And parts of it are for sale.

On Saturday, Nor’wester Rotary Club members began prying the panels off the concrete wall behind the downtown Port Angeles fountain at First and Laurel streets, where it has hung since January 2000.

The concrete walls will be sandblasted and primed next month in preparation for Tim Quinn of Sequim, who painted the original mural, to recreate the mural directly on the concrete walls beginning in June and lasting probably until September.

“We won’t get it [all removed] today,” said Nor’wester Rotary Club president Kurt Anderson Saturday, as he and others wrenched the panels from their frame.

He said that Quinn, “has graciously agreed to redo the mural for the same price he did in 1999, $16,000.”

The refurbished mural will be one of the attractions during the Arts in Action festival, planned July 25-27, Anderson said.

The festival will offers arts and crafts and live music, along with the North American Masters Sand Sculpture Invitational presented by Windermere Real Estate.

The panels had been photographed prior to their removal to assist Quinn in his task.

He must recreate images that include representations of former presidents Teddy Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt, as well as 50 animals ranging from woodpeckers to elk.

The panoramic painting also blends vistas of Rialto Beach, Sol Duc Falls and Seven Lakes Basin.

After each of the panels and the wooden frame behind them were taken down, the screws were removed before the panels were loaded into a pickup truck.
