PORT ANGELES — Community Multicultural Task Force members Thursday lauded the U.S. Coast Guard’s handling of recent allegations of racism against a guardsman that later proved to be false.
“I do want to applaud the Coast Guard,” Police Chief Tom Riepe said, citing the Coast Guard’s cooperation in investigating the incident.
Mayor Glenn Wiggins, who heads the task force, said he appreciates the “openness and candor” of Capt. William Peterson, commanding officer of Coast Guard Group/Air Station Port Angeles, regarding the investigation.
The inquiry stems from a black guardsman’s report last month that he was the victim of three racially based incidents in Port Angeles, the most serious of which he later admitted was false.
