More than 100 Monroe Elementary School parents met Thursday night to raise their concerns that children are being forgotten in the Port Angeles School District’s deliberations to close a school.
Superintendent Gary Cohn said the School Board could decide Monday whether to close Monroe or Fairview, the district’s two easternmost elementary schools, to save around $300,000 from the cash-strapped budget.
Parents said Monroe should not be closed because it is a “family” that wants to stay together. They worried that closing any school would have a huge impact compared with small budget savings, and will result in increased class sizes, lower academic performance and children forced to attend classes in portable buildings.
