PORT ANGELES — Four years after operational funding for a crisis mental health center was soundly defeated by Clallam County, a new care plan is beginning to emerge.
Peninsula Community Mental Health Center Executive Director Don Zanon said Thursday the non-profit organization is willing to convert space in its headquarters at 118 E. Eighth St. into a crisis mental health center.
“That would be our contribution,” Zanon said.
In 1998, voters responded with a resounding “no” to a tax levy that would have provided $2.5 million for operating the crisis mental health center for a five-year period.
That plan would have cost taxpayers an additional $14 per year on property assessed at $100,000. But more than 54 percent of those going to the polls voted against the proposal.
Zanon isn’t sure what method of funding might be suggested for the next attempt to locate a mental health center here.
