PORT ANGELES — Darrell Robert Anderson is a waver.
He waves.
At 68, that’s what he does.
Almost every day of the week from about 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. — with a lunch break — he parks his motorized wheelchair in the First Church of God parking lot at the southeast corner of Race and Fifth streets and waves at an endless stream of cars zipping by.
No frills.
No signs.
No agenda.
Just a friendly wave.
The Korean War veteran, born and raised in Port Angeles, is perfectly lucid.
Nobody makes him do it.
But ever since his wife Janice died in April 2004, Anderson figures this is the best way to get some fresh air and — most importantly — get out of the house.
“I did it a few times when she was alive,” Anderson said.
“But I took it up as a hobby afterwards.”
