PORT ANGELES — A 69-year-old man from the Port Angeles area is dead after being involved in a single all-terrain-vehicle wreck Monday evening on an ATV path near the intersection of U.S. Highway 101 and Hansen Road.
Daniel Hilt was discovered at the bottom of an embankment west of Port Angeles by a neighbor at about 7:47 p.m. Monday, according to the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.
“It looked like it was just an accident,” Undersheriff Ron Peregrin said Tuesday.
“He wasn’t wearing a helmet,” Peregrin added.
Hilt’s body was discovered at the bottom of a 15-foot embankment.
His four-wheeled ATV was on top of him, said Sgt. John Hollis of the Sheriff’s Office.
Hilt, who lived on Hansen Road, appeared to have been traveling along an ATV path that was on state-owned land beneath a stand of power lines, according to Hollis.
Peregrin said that Hilt’s wife had said that her husband was running late for dinner, so she asked a neighbor to go looking for him along the ATV trail.
The neighbor found Hilt’s body and phoned 9-1-1, Peregrin said.
