Port Angeles man charged with gun, drug offenses

PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles man who allegedly fled from Clallam County sheriff’s deputies Sunday was charged in Clallam County Superior Court with several drug- and gun-related charges Wednesday.

Gerald Neil Walkup, 26, is charged with two counts of possession with intent to manufacture or deliver a controlled substance, heroin and methamphetamine; possession of a stolen firearm; four counts of first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm; and unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon.

His arraignment is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. April 14.

Each of the firearm charges carries a maximum of 10 years in prison and the dangerous weapon charge carries up to 364 days.

Walkup was arrested after deputies recognized him in a vehicle reported as being suspicious east of Port Angeles on Sunday.

When deputies arrived, Walkup drove off at a high rate of speed, court records say.

Deputies found the vehicle minutes later after it had crashed near the corner of East Seventh Avenue and North Bourchier Street in Gales Addition in east Port Angeles.

Deputies found a meth pipe in plain view in the car when they arrived, records say.

Walkup was arrested blocks away and deputies later searched the car he was driving, court records say.

The incident ended with deputies seizing 950 grams of heroin, more than 400 grams of meth, four guns, about 20 cellphones, dozens of car keys, 100 ounces of silver and about $9,000 in cash, they said.

About $5,500 was in the vehicle and about $3,500 was in Walkup’s sock, court records say.

Detective Sgt. John Keegan of the Olympic Peninsula Narcotics Team (OPNET) called it one of the largest heroin seizures in the county in “a long time.”

OPNET had been investigating Walkup, Keegan said.

Keegan said charges have also been referred to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, which is typical of an OPNET investigation.

Walkup has two previous felony convictions for drug-related crimes.
