Quilcene driver treated and released at scene

QUILCENE — An 18-year-old Port Angeles man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center after the pickup he was driving collided with another vehicle on U.S. Highway 101 north of Quilcene on Monday, the State Patrol said.

Parker James Melvin Hill was traveling southbound in a 1999 Toyota pickup when he attempted a U-turn and was struck by a 2001 Ford F-250 pickup driven by William Leon Bacchus Jr. in the northbound lane, troopers said in a collision memo.

“He’s still being assessed and treated in the emergency department and not in any life threatening condition,” Harborview spokeswoman Susan Gregg said at about 5 p.m. Monday.

The collision occurred at about 1:39 p.m. at milepost 285 near the U.S. Highway 101-state Highway 104 interchange.

The State Patrol said Hill “apparently did not see” the pickup Bacchus was driving when he attempted the U-turn and was struck in the driver’s side, troopers said in the collision memo.

Bacchus had attempted to avoid the pickup and crossed the center line before the crash, according to State Patrol.

Bacchus, 65, of Quilcene was treated and released at the scene.

Two passengers in the pickup Hill was driving, Maddison McArther, 19, and Martin B. Dillon, 20, had left the crash site before law enforcement arrived, the State Patrol said.

There were no passengers in the pickup Bacchus was driving.

Hill and Bacchus were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, trooper said. Drugs or alcohol were not involved.

The State Patrol said Hill received an infraction for an improper U-turn.

The collision partially blocked U.S. Highway 101 until 3:05 p.m., the state Department of Transportation said.
