PORT ANGELES — Standing in rows of poppies, lilacs and daisies, 90-year-old flower grower Fran Meyers says it is time to retire.
“It is hard to let go of my garden,” Meyers said, “but it is time.”
Meyers started Fran’s Flowers in 1986 out of her Gales Addition home, and as the garden grew, so did her clientele.
“I used to deliver flowers from Port Angeles to Bremerton,” she said. “Local florists would call and order flowers, and I would deliver them.”
Meyers said she started the business at age 73 to supplement her income, and this is the first year she has not sold flowers to area florists since starting her garden.
She sold fresh-cut flowers, dried flowers and live plants to florists and at Gertie’s Farmers Market in Port Angeles.
Jorga Hildre, manager of Sofie’s Flowers and Gifts of Port Angeles, said the store often bought flowers from Meyers.
“She crammed a ton of flowers into that little plot of land in Gales Addition,” Hildre said.
“She grew beautiful flowers and such a variety. She was always very generous and sweet, and is an incredibly hard worker.”
