PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Lefties, the newest baseball team in the West Coast League, is now looking for an energetic public address announcer to captivate its crowds.
The team isn’t taking resumes though. Tryouts are set during Major League Baseball playoff games at bars across the North Olympic Peninsula.
Tryouts are currently scheduled starting next month in Port Angeles and Sequim, but the organization might announce venues in Port Townsend and Forks, said Lefties General Manager Ryan Hickey.
Contestants will be given the task of performing public address duties in front of patrons at each bar to the live broadcast of the MLB playoff game.
This includes narrating the game, entertaining the crowd and managing music.
In July, the Port Angeles City Council approved the team to use Civic Field. The team will debut in June 2017 with up to 36 summertime games.
“We want someone that has that unique voice and flare to get to the voice behind announcing our home players,” Hickey said, adding that the right announcer will need to enunciate well, work under pressure and work quickly.
Kevin Chambers, former public address announcer for the Kitsap Bluejackets will be in attendance to MC the event for the Lefties. Members of the Lefties front office will also attend the event and be available to meet.
Hickey said he’s never heard of tryouts for this position before, but is looking forward to engaging with businesses and the community.
“We were thinking of how to include the community in this,” he said. “The best way to do that is to get involved with some local businesses.”
When Lefties co-owner Matt Acker approached Hickey with the idea, he was sold, he said.
While people who want the gig can just show up to the tryouts, Hickey said it would be helpful if people contacted him ahead of time.
While the dates have been determined, the times have not. Times will be based on the playoff schedule once the MLB releases it.
Hickey said he hopes to have additional venues announced by the weekend. Hickey said this is just one example of how the Lefties plan to engage the community.
The team is working on other types of events, but Hickey said it’s too early to discuss them.
“This team and organization, we want to be part of Port Angeles — not a separate entity,” he said.
