Port Angeles: Hung jury in robbery case involving boy, 17, tried as an adult

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County Superior Court jurors were unable to reach a verdict Thursday in the trial of a 17-year-old boy charged as an adult for a convenience store robbery.

The 12-person jury deliberated about five hours and voted 9-3 to convict Joseph James Chartraw, resulting in a hung jury and leaving open the possibility for a future trial or a lesser charge in juvenile court.

“I’m happy that he was not convicted, and unless some arrangement can be made to send this back to juvenile court, I’ll try this as many times as it takes,” Chartraw’s attorney, Ralph Anderson of Clallam-Jefferson Public Defenders, said Thursday.

Clallam County Prosecuting Attorney Deb Kelly, who prosecuted the case, said she is looking at her options of where to go next with the case.
