PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles High School will conduct a drill Friday to simulate what students would do in the event of an active shooter on campus.
The drill will take place during a less structured time in the class schedule.
“We plan to hold a ‘mock lunch’ during advisory,” Assistant Principal Jeff Lunt said in a press release. “Students and staff will go to the location where they usually have lunch.”
During the drill, the campus will be in lockdown.
Once the drill is completed, students and staff will take part in a debriefing.
“Although it is statistically unlikely that a student would ever actually experience this type of situation, practicing this drill will show us how to respond in the event that we do have this type of lockdown,” Lunt said.
“Plans have been in the works with security, law enforcement and the fire department,” Lunt said. “The counseling office is preparing to assist with any students or staff that may need to talk following the drill.”
The information has been conveyed to high school families. Advisory teachers are reviewing with their students in anticipation, as well.
Lunt advises students, “as a general rule, if you see someone who is in trouble, or something doesn’t look right, tell someone.”
