Port Angeles High School is staging an early Homecoming Week this year — a September instead of October start to the autumn tradition.
The Roughrider Homecoming Week begins today, and on Friday will be marked with a parade before the homecoming game at Civic Field against Klahowya High School.
“We only have one home game scheduled in October, and it’s against Sequim,” said Principal Garry Cameron, referring to the game Oct. 12.
Both are very special games, with Sequim’s Timberwolves being the Roughriders’ arch rival in football, and there was a desire to continue to keep the two games as separate events, Cameron said.
“It would be kind of like having Thanksgiving and New Year on the same day,” he said.
The Buff Puff volleyball game will begin the Port Angeles Homecoming Week tonight at
7 p.m., at the school gymnasium, 304 E. Park Ave.
Entry to the Buff Puff game is one can of pet food, to be donated to the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society.
A class vs. class tug-of-war tournament will be held at
7 p.m. Wednesday at Elks Playfield, at the corner of South Pine and 13th streets.
The classes will clash again at 7 p.m. Thursday, with flag football at Elks Playfield.
The cost of entry to Wednesday and Thursday’s events is a can of food for the Port Angeles Food Bank.
This year’s homecoming theme will be board games, said Laurel Jenkens, Associated Student Body spokeswoman.
Each class selected a board game as its theme, Jenkens said.
The senior class chosen Monopoly; the juniors will play in Candyland; sophomores will navigate the jungles of Jumanji; and freshmen will be represent with the game of Life.
On Friday, students will wear green and white, and the Associated Student Body urged Port Angeles alumni and school supporters citywide to wear the school colors, green and white.
The Roughrider Homecoming Parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St.
Jenkins invited all alumni to march in the parade. Parade participants will meet in the parking lot behind the courthouse.
The route will follow East Fifth Street east to South Francis Street, where it will turn north to end near Civic Field at Race and Fourth streets.
Homecoming weekend will conclude with the Homecoming Dance at the Port Angeles High School gymnasium on Saturday.
Other schools on the North Olympic Peninsula will be holding homecoming weeks during the month of October.
Neah Bay High School will play its homecoming game Friday, Oct. 5, with the homecoming dance on Saturday, Oct. 6.
Sequim, Forks, and Chimacum high schools will play their homecoming football games on Friday, Oct. 12, with homecoming dances on Saturday, Oct. 13.
Crescent High School’s homecoming football game and dance will be held Saturday, Oct. 13.
Port Townsend High School will play its homecoming football game on Friday, Oct. 19, with the homecoming dance Saturday, Oct. 20.
Quilcene High School will hold its homecoming football game and dance Saturday, Oct. 20.
Clallam Bay High School will play its homecoming football game on Friday Oct. 26, with the homecoming dance Saturday Oct. 27.
