Port Angeles High School cadets place high in conference competition

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles High School cadets returned home with an armful of awards from a competition in Tacoma.

The school’s Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets earned four top-three finishes Dec. 12 at the Washington High School (Tacoma) JROTC Drill and Rifle meet.

“The cadets continue to learn that through the hard work and dedication, they can overcome any challenge,” said Capt. Jon Picker, senior instructor for the Port Angeles NJROTC.

“Roughrider teams did their very best and it surely paid off,” Picker said.

The 21-member armed drill team placed first in its category.

Color guard

A four-member color guard unit placed third in the Color Guard A category, and a second color guard unit placed first in the Color Guard B category.

The unit’s physical fitness team placed third in the physical fitness competition.

Cadet Haley Hollingsworth earned individual honors by placing fifth overall in the sporter division of the air rifle competition.

The unit’s next competition will be Jan. 30 at Rogers High School in Puyallup.

There are 120 members of the unit at Port Angeles High and 34 cadets compete at the meets.

The team is a member of the Columbia River Division of the JROTC Drill and Rifle Northwest Conference and is defending the unit’s 2015 state championship.

Meets include both unit and individual competition in color guard, air rifle, team and individual armed drill, team and individual unarmed drill, and a physical fitness test.
