PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles High School Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets (NJROTC) claimed the award of overall state champion at the Northwest Drill &Rifle State Championship.
Twenty-six high schools qualified from across Washington and Oregon for the competition at Rogers High School in Puyallup on March 18.
Results are as follows:
• Overall State Champion: Port Angeles High School Roughriders.
• Color Guard Team 1: First place, state champion: Kylee Reid, Erin Edwards, Austin Woods and Benjamin Yesiki.
• Color Guard Team 2: First place, state champion: Hailey Hollingsworth, Zachary Parrill, Cody Brooks and Edwin Albright.
• Armed Drill Team: First place, state champion: Edwin Albright, Brooklyn Alton, Arianna Baar, Lisa Bell, Cody Brooks, Jacob Butler, Alexis Cobb, Erin Edwards, Hailey Hollingsworth, Reed Morace, Marcus Musalek, Zachary Parrill, Makayla Peabody, Mikayla Ramey, Kylee Reid, Elena Robison, Bryson Schafer, Hollee Schnabel, Hunter Schnabel, Austin Woods and Benjamin Yesiki.
• Physical Strength Team: First place, state champion: Edwin Albright, Erin Edwards, Ellie Hiigel, Raynan Mani and Thomas Newton.
• Air Rifle (Sporter Division): Ninth place: Bronwyn Davis, Hailey Hollingsworth, Dakota Manley and Sundar Woodyard
• Drill Team Commander: First place, state champion, Cadet Kylee Reid.
• Iron Man: Sixth place, Cadet Thomas Newton.
• Iron Woman: Second place, Cadet Ellie Hiigel; sixth place, Cadet Erin Edwards.
“Facing stiff competition from Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force JROTC high schools, the cadets from Port Angeles took top honors,” said Capt. Jonathan Picker, PAHS senior naval science instructor.
Picker and Senior Chief Petty Officer Justin Beck, fellow PAHS naval science instructor, oversee the Port Angeles program.
