PORT ANGELES — An ice cream parlor, gift shop and saloon with the theme “Gay ’90s” — 1890s — may be future fixtures in the city’s downtown.
But patrons will have to look beyond the sidewalks, or more likely below them.
Members of a new committee dedicated to preserving and developing the Port Angeles Underground have the theme park and other long-range ideas in mind to attract tourists down under and make the underground a vital part of the city.
“I think it’s something that we could really expand on,” said Don Perry, director of the newly formed Port Angeles Underground Preservation Alliance and owner of Heritage Tours, which leads people through the underground.
The alliance, about 18 members strong, is taking the next steps to use the remaining historic area since the City Council voted to preserve the space in October.
The group has met twice, with its next meeting planned for 7:30 p.m. Jan. 14 at The Landings Restaurant and Dockside Lounge, 115 E. Railroad Ave.
The committee is open to anyone interested in shaping the Underground, and currently includes representatives from city, county, downtown, business and economic development groups.
