PORT ANGELES — At least 30 local business people and other residents will join Mayor Cherie Kidd in traveling to Victoria to join in the celebration of Canada Day on Monday.
“I’m delighted we’re getting such a good response on a workday,” Kidd said Saturday.
The Port Angeles delegation, which will include City Councilman Pat Downie, will take the 8:15 a.m. MV Coho to Victoria.
Port Angeles visitors will be welcomed by Victoria AM, a business leaders’ group.
Victoria City Councillor Charlayne Thornton-Joe will provide free red T-shirts for the Canadian Maple Leaf annual portrait of about 1,200 people on the lawn of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia building.
T-shirts already have been reserved, so if any want to join the trip Monday and be part of the photograph, they should wear red shirts, Kidd said.
The visit, intended to encourage tourism between the two cities, is not a city-sponsored event, and all participants pay their own way, Kidd said.
Last year, about 25 people traveled to Victoria for Canada Day.
“It was wonderful, so we’re going over again.”
After the photograph, Port Angeles visitors can go to the carnival, shop, dine, sightsee and watch a fireworks display, Kidd said.
Canada Day marks the anniversary of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick being united into a single country July 1, 1867, according to the Canada Day website at www.canada-day.ca.
The union was a result of the Constitution Act, which granted Canada much independence from England, the website says.
When the country became fully independent in 1982, Canada Day became an official holiday.
