PORT ANGELES — The city’s landfill fees and monthly garbage collection charges will increase by 5 percent in 2005, the City Council decided in a 4-3 vote on Tuesday night.
Another 5 percent hike in 2006 to pay for capital projects, such as stabilizing the bluff beneath the Port Angeles Landfill, will be reviewed next year.
Councilwomen Karen Rogers and Lauren Erickson were joined by Mayor Richard Headrick in voting against the one-year rate increase.
They wanted 5 percent increases in both 2005 and 2006, saying that would better ensure funding for capital projects.
City staff and the Utility Advisory Committee had recommended a 5 percent increase in 2005 and a second 5 percent increase in 2006.
