PORT ANGELES — The National Park Service on Tuesday night formally transferred ownership of a new water treatment plant to the city of Port Angeles.
Rep. Norm Dicks helped celebrate both the facility and the milestone it represents in the dam removal project to clear the Elwha River for salmon.
The council voted 7-0 to accept ownership of the water treatment plant after it is completed in 2009.
“I want to commend all of the players,” said Dicks, D-Belfair, who represents the 6th Congressional District.
“I just think this is an outstanding accomplishment.
“This is an enormous project. This is 20 percent of the construction budget of the National Park Service.
“People at parks all over the country have sacrificed their projects to be able for us to be able to do this.”
Said council member Karen Rogers, who served on the committee which developed the agreement and the plans for the removal project:
“Well, it only took us five city managers, numerous outside law firms, six city councils, and three park superintendents, but Congressman, we’re done.”
