PORT ANGELES — Vandals have struck again at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, this time bending the “eyelashes” of a steel bench sculpture and absconding with a pair of bronzed work boots.
“This is really malicious,” Center Director Jake Seniuk said Wednesday.
Employees on Tuesday discovered the damage to artist Michael McCafferty’s “Circumstance” and Sheila Klein’s “Eyelash Bench,” both on display in the center’s public outdoor art exhibit, 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd.
The culprits ripped several slate slabs from a circular design in the ground and stole McCafferty’s boots from the center of the work, which is valued at $1,500, Seniuk said.
They also re-arranged a dozen 1-inch-thick steel tines forming the back of a bench meant to resemble false eyelashes.
“Whoever vandalized it bent them into new contortions,” Seniuk said. “They’re kind of mangled.”
The piece was purchased by patrons for $3,500 and donated to the center in 2000.
