Port Angeles eyes trio of major projects this summer

PORT ANGELES – City engineers have been busy this winter designing a trio of major public works projects.

Now with one bid awarded Tuesday night, a bid opening set for this Tuesday and another preliminary bid award scheduled for March 19, it is the contractors’ turn to get busy.

First, there’s the eastern urban growth area sewer extension project.

The new line, to be built by the city and funded by the county, will extend from the city’s sewage treatment plant at Ennis Creek parallel to U.S. Highway 101 to the 19.9-acre former Kmart site near Masters Road.

A map of the sewer line’s route, along with contact information for several city and county officials, is available on the city of Port Angeles’ Web site at cityofpa.us.

The Port Angeles City Council awarded the $4.6 million project to Primo Construction of Carlsborg at its Tuesday night meeting.

City Engineer Gary Kenworthy told the City Council the project should begin in mid-April and has a contractual completion date of Nov. 1.

Kenworthy said Wednesday the contractor will decide which end of the route to start the project.

Most of the project will be done alongside Highway 101, not in the roadway, he said.

So the only major traffic impact will be during the two major crossings of Highway 101, at Masters Road near Koenig Chevrolet and at North Bayview Avenue near Safeway, Kenworthy said.

They will be done during off-hours to minimize those traffic impacts, he said.

Kemp Street, which parallels Highway 101 to the south, also will be impacted but it doesn’t have heavy traffic, Kenworthy said.
