Port Angeles: European designer to pitch aquatic center alternative

PORT ANGELES — The City Council will get a closer look tonight at a third option for the city’s new swimming pool, a European-style “aquatic center” that could possibly be built on the Port’s waterfront Oak Street property.

The work session, which could last up to two hours, will begin at 5 p.m. before the regular council meeting in the council chambers at City Hall, 321 E. Fifth St.

“I’m certainly hoping as many people as possible come out to hear this proposal firsthand,” said Public Works Director Glenn Cutler.

“It’s real exciting to have someone who has done this across the United States and Europe, and also has a connection to Port Angeles.”

The aquatic center proposal was presented to city officials last month by Concept Dorssers, which consists of Harry Dorssers and Treadwell Jones of Larkin Aquatics.

Dorssers has built aquatic facilities throughout Europe for 30 years. Jones has designed aquatic centers in the United States for 50 years.

Dorssers’ wife, Dina, went to Port Angeles High School with City Councilman Gary Braun’s daughter, Christina.
