PORT ANGELES — For 76 years, the town’s tallest building has been a focal point for gatherings, plays, conventions — and even a performance by Sammy Davis Jr.
“The Elks building was much more than a lodge,” said Dorothy Bailey of Port Angeles, who was secretary, bookkeeper and receptionist for the Elks Naval Lodge from 1956 to 1986.
“It was the community center,” she told Peninsula Daily News history columnist June Robinson for a “Back When” column last December.
“At that time, the Elks was the only place which had facilities to accommodate a large crowd, a small group and rooms for meetings,” Bailey recalled.
