Port Angeles Education Foundation awards grants

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Education Foundation has awarded 29 grants totaling $39,950 to educators in the school district for the 2016-17 school year. 

The amount is an increase of $9,000 over last year when 24 grants were awarded, foundation officials said.

“We were able to fund more projects this year due to the record-breaking amount raised at the 2016 Celebrate Education dinner with keynote speaker Leigh Morgan, chief operating officer of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and a 1986 graduate of Port Angeles High School,” said Nola Grier, administrative director.

District-wide grants

• $1,000 — All Port Angeles School District students, to attend Zydeco Experience performance during the Juan de Fuca Festival of the Arts. Submitted by Tina Smith-O’Hara.

• $1,000 — All District 3 grade students, for fall field trips to Hurricane Ridge. Submitted by Michele Olsen.

• $1,053 — All district elementary school students, to purchase a kit of specially made weighted items to support students who have sensory needs. Submitted by Amity Butler.

• $1,280 — All district kindergarten students and Port Angeles High School drama students, for collaborative drama performance and discussion. Submitted by Jeanne Wolfley.

Dry Creek Elementary

• $819 — Digital microscope for fourth-grade team. Submitted by Brian Clark.

• $191 — Puzzles for preschoolers to enhance math and problem-solving skills, given to the Infant/Toddler & Preschool. Submitted by Ann Mitchell.

Franklin Elementary

• $400 — Portable computer, accessories and apps for the resource room for students with unique learning challenges. Submitted by Kim Davis.

• $700 — Multi-grade-level enrichment cluster field trips. Submitted by Claire Rausch.

• $119 — Little Passports for the first-grade team to develop map skills and study geography, countries and culture. Submitted by Sarah Schaefermeyer.

• $1,199 — After-school writing group for fourth-grade team to learn coding by using Ozobot robots. Submitted by Gunnar Thomason.

Hamilton Elementary

• $2,000 — Transportation for all kindergarten students to attend Seattle Children’s Theater performance of “Firehouse Cat.” Submitted by Jennifer Mills, Danyelle Brannan and Linda Waknitz.

• $2,500 — Kindergarten-through-sixth-grade students for Missoula Children’s Theatre weeklong workshops culminating in a full-length production open to the public. Submitted by Rachel Sullivan.

• $2,000 — Transportation costs to Point Defiance Zoo for first-grade team. Submitted by Sara Hochberger.

• $1,000 — Salt Creek beach cleanup and storm drain pollution prevention for fifth-grade team. Submitted by George Kheriaty.

• $1,325— Transportation costs to Museum of Flight in Seattle for sixth-grade team. Submitted by Lisa Martinez.

Jefferson Elementary

• $650 — All students for NatureBridge environmental stewardship lessons and assembly. Submitted by Malinda Angevine.

• $1,580 — Swimming lessons for all fourth-grade students at William Shore Memorial Pool. Submitted by Raena Young.

Roosevelt Elementary

• $2,695 — Imagination playground foam blocks for all students. Submitted by Taffy Bond.

• $1,200 — Three grade-level presentations by author Paul Owen to all students. Submitted by Erika Kuch.

• $2,530 — Learning and inquiry projects to study governance and law for first-through-sixth-grade highly capable students. Submitted by Lambert Grimes, Terri Longin and Karen Doran.

• $2,569 — Collaborative research projects on animals with a trip to Point Defiance Zoo for kindergarten and second-grade students. Submitted by Molly Hibler.

• $2,229 — Field trips for fourth-grade students to the Washington State Museum and Museum of Glass. Submitted by Kathryn Hartman.

• $1,940 — Chromebook computers for intensive instruction in reading, writing and math for Learning Center students. Submitted by Brenda Tisdale.

Stevens Middle School

• $3,230 — To fund seventh-grade students studying “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe” through the book, the movie and on stage at Seattle Children’s Theater. Submitted by Stacey Sanders.

• $260 — To fund eighth-grade students studying the Whitman massacre and courtroom procedures and then presenting a trial in the Clallam County Courthouse. Submitted by Angie Gooding.

Port Angeles and Lincoln high schools

• $282 — Youth United awards for students completing requirements to letter in community service. Submitted by Smith O’Hara.

Lincoln High School

• $1,060 — All students, cost of transportation to Seattle Science Center. Submitted by Cindy Crumb.

Port Angeles High School

• $639 — Field trip transportation for Science Club students. Submitted by John Gallagher.

• $2,500 — Local and regional transportation for science students for ongoing environmental and marine projects. Submitted by Cheryl Girardi.

As part of its annual fundraising effort, the foundation will host a fundraising dinner in the spring. More details about the event will be released later.

The foundation has awarded school and teacher grants in Port Angeles schools for more than 20 years. The grants are to expand and enrich student experiences, promote creativity in the classroom and help students achieve academically.
