PORT ANGELES — The state Human Rights Commission’s 800-number to report discrimination complaints will be advertised citywide after being endorsed by the Port Angeles Community Multicultural Task Force on Thursday.
Two representatives from the commission’s Seattle office, Marilyn Akita and Cheryl Strobert, explained how the hot line worked and how discrimination accusations are investigated.
Akita and Strobert said the hot line — 800-233-3247 — can be called 24 hours a day from anywhere on the North Olympic Peninsula or elsewhere in the state.
Some large cities like Seattle have their own hot line for discrimination complaints, but the task force felt that using the state number would be best for local residents and visitors — and would avoid the high cost of establishing a dedicated hot line system in Port Angeles.
Those who call the hot line during business hours will be interviewed by a trained “intake officer” in Seattle or Olympia.
Those who call outside of business hours will be contacted later.
