PORT ANGELES — Smoke and flames will rise from south of William R. Fairchild International Airport on May 22, but emergency service agencies will be expecting it.
A simulated airplane crash will begin at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday about 1,000 feet south of the runway, so it won’t affect airport operations, Airport Manager Jeff Robb said earlier this week.
The full-scale drill is required by the Federal Aviation Administration every three years for the airport to maintain its “139 certificate,” Robb said.
The certification allows for continued passenger aircraft service.
It is not connected to similar disaster drills conducted by the Homeland Security Department, he said.
