PORT ANGELES — The remaining historical Underground Port Angeles will be preserved following a unanimous City Council vote at Tuesday night’s meeting.
“The area is worth more as an historical attraction now than with a lid,” said Councilman Richard Headrick.
“Putting a lid on it would be like putting paint on antiques. Let’s not spend $550,000 to put a lid over this area,” he said.
The council’s decision means the remaining Underground portion of the downtown area has been saved from being destroyed by new sidewalks.
About 30 people were on hand for the meeting, and a dozen went to the podium to ask the council to save the Underground.
