The Port Angeles City Council and Clallam County commissioners took the first giant step Tuesday toward shipping most of the county’s garbage off the North Olympic Peninsula by the latter half of the decade.
Now both governments will await a Sequim City Council’s decision, possibly this morning, whether to join them in the new venture.
County commissioners and the Port Angeles council approved two versions of an operating agreement for the proposed garbage transfer station at the city landfill site — one that includes the city of Sequim and one that doesn’t.
Mayor Richard Headrick was authorized to sign whichever agreement was appropriate after Sequim decides.
The Clallam County commissioners also unanimously approved both agreements at their Tuesday morning meeting.
Commissioners Chairman Steve Tharinger, D-Dungeness, said the commissioners will meet later this week to finalize their action once the Sequim City Council makes its decision.

The Sequim council will review the transfer station operating agreement during a work session at 9 a.m. today at Guy Cole Convention Center in Carrie Blake Park, 202 N. Blake Ave.
“We’re hoping Sequim will realize the advantages of going with this agreement,” Tharinger said, noting the final decision was ultimately up to the city of Port Angeles, which operates the landfill just west of William R. Fairchild International Airport.
