PORT ANGELES — A 20-year-old city landmark is getting a facelift during the next two months.
Beginning Thursday, City Pier will be closed to boats and pedestrians until Feb. 15 to allow for the removal and replacement of 18 load-bearing pilings and 81 timber cross braces, City Civil Engineer Terri Partch said Tuesday.
The exact areas of closure will move with the contractor’s boom truck, Partch said.
The City Pier parking lot at the foot of Lincoln Street may be closed on some days as well to provide an area for delivery of materials and staging, she said.
Access to the nearby Waterfront Trail — part of the Olympic Discovery Trail system — won’t be affected.
Events still possible
“If there’s an event at City Pier, we’ll make arrangements,” Partch said.
City Pier was built in 1985 with a state grant.
In addition to its role as a dock for boats and, until 2002, a Coast Guard cutter, the pier also serves as a park and summer concert site.
The observation tower at the water’s end has become somewhat of a tourist landmark.
But after a 2004 inspection, parking was prohibited on a portion of the pier due to failing support piles.
The inspection revealed the need to replace the 18 bearing pilings and 81 timber braces.
The City Council on Sept. 6 awarded the $434,000 project to American Construction Company of Everett.
