PORT ANGELES — Two residents told the City Council they fear for their homes and safety and want fireworks banned inside the city.
“I’m too afraid to leave my house.,” an emotional Jan Butler said at the council’s Wednesday night meeting. “This has nothing to do with celebrating the holiday.”
Butler, who lives on South I Street, said she has watched as bottle rockets fly from 13th Street across I Street onto her roof.
The police department does its best but can’t catch everyone using fireworks, she said.
She is going to lose a 30-year-old parrot because of the stress from this latest July Fourth, Butler said tearfully.
The neighborhood had no wild birds either the day after the Fourth of July because of the fireworks, she said.
Butler said the police department received 44 fireworks complaints on July Fourth and the fire department was called to eight fires caused by fireworks.
The situation became worse after 11 p.m., Butler said.
