PORT ANGELES — A 17-year-old Port Angeles boy was listed in satisfactory condition at Harborview Medical Center after he ran into West Eighth Street and was struck by a Dodge pickup truck Tuesday, police said.
Zachary Harper was running across the Port Angeles thoroughfare near a parked delivery truck when he was struck just west of Sabai Thai restaurant near B Street, Port Angeles Police Sgt. Barb McFall said.
“It appeared to be an accident,” McFall said.
The driver of the red Dodge Dakota didn’t have enough time to stop after Harper darted into view, McFall said.
The driver was not cited.
“There happened to be a delivery truck on the north side of the street,” McFall said.
“He ran across the street from north to south right in front of that delivery truck. The guy that hit him had no view because of the truck.”
Medics were attending to Harper when McFall arrived at the scene.
“He was breathing and conscious at that point,” McFall said.
“I know he has a head injury.”
Police closed both lanes of Eighth Street and rerouted traffic from B to C streets during the investigation. The wreck was reported shortly after noon.
Harper was airlifted to the Seattle hospital as a precaution, McFall said. He was not admitted to Olympic Medical Center.
Harborview spokeswoman Susan Gregg said Harper was listed in satisfactory condition at 4:45 p.m.
McFall said it was her understanding that Harper was on his way to the North Olympic Peninsula Skills Center when the accident occurred.
“I believe he attends the skills center,” she said.
McFall reminded pedestrians to use crosswalks, marked or unmarked, when crossing the street.
