PORT ANGELES — If you’ve been wondering what those workers dressed in orange are doing along roads east of the city, they are preparing for the new sewer line to Port Angeles’ eastern urban growth area.
The estimated $4.5 million project will extend the sewer collector from the city’s sewage treatment plant at Ennis Creek to the 19.9-acre former Kmart site on U.S. Highway 101 by Memorial Day 2007.
The sewer line’s terminus is the site of a planned 195,293-square-foot Wal-Mart Supercenter west of Morse Creek.
City Engineer Gary Kenworthy said the survey crews are gathering information to assist in the location and design of the sewer line, such as identifying existing infrastructure and utilities.
They will work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday through the middle of June.
The work is not expected to cause traffic delays, but workers will be within or adjacent to the right of way.
Proposed route
The proposed sewer line route will go from the city sewage treatment plant at Ennis Creek down Third Avenue and Baker Street and across Pioneer Avenue to Monroe Road.
Then it will follow U.S. Highway 101 to the Safeway shopping center, cross the highway and follow Kemp Street to Mount Pleasant Road.
The final leg will follow U.S. Highway 101 again to the future Wal-Mart site.
