Port Angeles asphalt repairs begin

Roads closed to through traffic during construction

PORT ANGELES — Crews will begin initial work for asphalt repairs on several Port Angeles streets and intersections today.

The work will begin in earnest Monday, city officials said.

The project areas are:

• Peabody Street between Eighth Street and Ahlvers Road.

• Park Avenue between Peabody and Race streets.

• The intersection of South N Street and West Fourth Street.

• Marine Drive near the McKinley Paper Company mill.

• Lincoln Street between Fourth and Fifth streets.

Roads will be closed to through traffic during construction. Flaggers will direct local traffic through the construction zones.

“Our goal is to complete the project with as little inconvenience as possible while keeping safety of the public, pedestrians and motorists a top priority,” Project Manager Jeremy Pozernick said in a Wednesday announcement.

“Please use alternate routes and watch for trucks entering and leaving the work areas. Please remember, when you see our work crews, slow down for safety.”

The Port Angeles City Council last month awarded a $359,550 contract to Lakeside Industries Inc. of Port Angeles to repair the damaged streets.

Public Works and Utilities Director Thomas Hunter said the project involves routine chip sealing on Peabody Street and Park Avenue and more “surgical” paving where emergency sewer and water main repairs were made over the winter on Lincoln Street, Marine Drive and the corner of Fourth and N Streets.

The chip sealing on Peabody Street is scheduled to take place between Monday and April 21.

Chip sealing on Park Avenue is slated to occur between April 22 and April 27.

Repairs to the corner of Fourth and N streets will be made from April 28 to April 30, city officials said.

No timeline was given for the work on Lincoln Street and Marine Drive.

“Dates may change, and work may be extended depending on weather, progress and conditions,” city officials said.

The paving work is being conducted in accordance with Gov. Jay Inslee’s stay-at-home proclamation for COVID-19.

The public is asked to remain at least 6 feet from work crews.

“Repairing these roads ensures essential services continue for the public and first responders,” the city announcement said.

“Additionally, if the work were delayed, the city would run the risk of additional damage and unsafe conditions developing on these roads.”
