PORT ANGELES — A new access road to William R. Fairchild International Airport was opened for traffic Monday afternoon — more than a decade than it was first proposed and less than a week after the airport’s only passenger carrier, Horizon Air, said it was ending service after Jan. 6.
The ribbon was cut on the new road at a 1:30 p.m. ceremony that included Port Angeles City Council members, Clallam County commissioners and Port of Port Angeles commissioners and staff.
The new 1,800-foot road connects the realigned Edgewood Drive with the airport’s terminal area.
The road includes two 12-foot paved lanes and a 5-foot sidewalk with landscaping on one side, lighting and stormwater control.
The existing entrance road will be removed to enhance aviation safety.
