Police seek man who brandished gun in Port Angeles robbery

PORT ANGELES — Police were searching Tuesday for a man who brandished a gun while robbing the Jackpot Food Mart and 76 gas station in downtown Port Angeles.

Police say a man dressed in dark clothing wearing a motorcycle helmet showed a firearm and took an undisclosed amount of cash from the business at 331 W. First St., on Monday night.

The robbery was reported at 9:14 p.m.

“The suspect entered the 76 station armed with a firearm and demanded money from the register,” according to a press release.

Sgt. Kevin Miller described the man as being in his late teens to early 20s, but had no other identifying information.

“Right now we’re working leads and don’t want to do anything to tamper our investigation,” he said.

“We’re working a couple of different leads and we hope to make some ground in the next couple of days.”

The store’s owner, who was working during the robbery, said Tuesday that when the man first entered the store he asked the man to remove his helmet.

The man told the owner, who asked not to be named, that the helmet was tight and he didn’t want to remove it.

He then walked around the store for awhile and went to the register as if he was purchasing candy.

The man then lifted his shirt and showed a gun in his waistband and demanded money, according to the owner.

The owner was unsure of how much money the man took and said he was still shaking from the robbery.

The man also demanded the owner hand over his cell phone, which the robber left outside the door to the store.

He fled the scene southbound prior to police arriving, police said.

The owner said he did not see whether the man used a vehicle to flee the store.

“Wish I could tell you more,” Miller said. “We just need time to work that case.”
