Police follow some leads in Port Angeles car robbery

PORT ANGELES — Police on Monday were still trying to track down the man who robbed a woman at knifepoint Saturday night and stole her car.

But beyond describing the assailant as an “older, 6-foot-tall, slender man” who apparently abandoned the car a few blocks away and is at large, officers have not offered a more detailed description.

Some of the information is not available at this time and some might be withheld, Deputy Police Chief Brian Smith said Monday.

A lack of details made public after the armed robbery is sometimes a strategic choice made during an investigation, Smith said.

“The suspect obviously knows who he is,” he said.

Smith said detectives are working with several leads in the case.

At 2 a.m. Saturday, a woman employee of Wendy’s restaurant, 1830 E. First St., reported that she was robbed in the parking lot by a man who threatened her with a small folding knife.

He hit her and took her purse, keys, cellphone and car, a silver Pontiac sedan, police reported.

The car was found when a resident in an apartment building on South Penn Street, near Wendy’s restaurant, called police to report a “suspicious” car parked in the complex’s parking lot, Smith said.

Police were reviewing video-surveillance footage from surrounding businesses to see if any cameras caught the robbery on tape.

“There are a lot of cameras in the area,” Smith said.

Smith said he did not know if the victim’s purse was found in the car or if there were any clues to the assailant’s identity left inside.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call the Port Angeles Police Department at 360-452-4545 or leave an anonymous tip with North Olympic Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.

Crime Stoppers offers a standing $1,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest in a felony case, such as a robbery.
