PORT TOWNSEND — Police don’t plan to crack down on skaters quite yet. They want to give them a chance to know the rules first.
In the wake of this week’s Port Townsend City Council decision to add the Haller Fountain and terrace steps to a list of areas where skateboarding is prohibited, the Port Townsend Police Department plans to begin enforcing the law.
“But want to educate everyone before we start enforcing it,” said Sgt. Ed Green.
None of the skaters at the Port Townsend Skate Park on Wednesday afternoon said they had heard of the laws before.
“I heard a rumor that it’s not allowed outside the park, but that can’t be true,” said Mike Biskup of Port Townsend.
When told about the restrictions on skating in the city, the 38-year-old skater said, “I don’t know what I think about that.”
Biskup said he has skated to the park on a number of occasions, and has never been asked to stop.
“I’m not causing any problems,” he said, “and neither has my son.”
