Plans for ODT sections in Port Angeles to be unveiled

PORT ANGELES — Three sections of the Olympic Discovery Trail in Port Angeles remain to be completed, and plans for those sections will be unveiled Oct. 11.

Residents, businesses and interested stakeholders are asked to provide feedback about to-date design efforts during the open house at the Vern Burton Community Center meeting rooms at 304 E. Fourth St.

City staff and the project team will be available from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. to showcase and discuss the design plans, which are about 30 percent completed, for each trail section.

The sections are:

• The Working Waterfront, from Valley Creek Estuary to East Marina Entry.

• Hill Street Marine Bluff, from Hill Street Marine Bluff to Crown Park.

• The Crown Park Neighborhood, from Fourth and Milwaukee streets between Crown Park and the current designated trail end at 10th and Milwaukee streets.

Those interested in attending can arrive at any time, event organizers said.

The city owns or operates more than 13 miles of trails between the Morse Creek trestle and the Elwha River pedestrian and bicycle bridge — 6 miles of which is comprised of the Olympic Discovery Trail.

In 2009, the city partnered with the Peninsula Trails Coalition, Clallam County and the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe — with financial assistance from the Nonmotorized & Off-Road Vehicle Activities Program of the state Recreation & Conservation Office — to draft a plan to complete the section of trail between the Elwha River, as well as the intersection of Hill Street and Marine Drive.

By 2012, with the assistance of volunteer efforts, the plan had been realized through several phases from the Elwha to the intersection of 10th Street and Milwaukee Boulevard.

The current project — and the focus of the open house — is completing the remainder of the trail maintained by the city.

Those unable to attend the open house who would like to share input or submit a question, can do so online at www.survey monkey.com.
