PORT ANGELES — Pink ribbons. Pink quilt raffle. Pink golf tournament. Pink Angeles.
The annual Pink Up Port Angeles campaign, which benefits Operation Uplift — a Port Angeles-based nonprofit cancer support group — includes favorite fundraisers from years past.
The campaign’s in full swing. On Saturday, members of the Soroptimist International of Port Angeles-Noon Club set up a booth at Swain’s General Store and hosted a free breast health clinic.
The upcoming week through Friday promises more Pink Up traditions.
On Tuesday, the Port Angeles City Council will temporarily change the city’s name to “Pink Angeles.”
And throughout the week, pink ribbons will appear in storefronts across town to represent each donation to Operation Uplift.
On Friday, the club will host a four-person scramble golf tournament at the Peninsula Golf Club, 824 S. Lindberg Road, from noon to about 4:30 p.m.
It’s sure to be a fun day, Oates said, but also one that holds special significance for select competitors.
“There are certain people who golf every year because they’ve been touched by cancer,” said Lori Oates, secretary/chair for the Soroptimist International of Port Angeles-Noon Club.
Afterward, golfers and audience members can satisfy a golf-induced hunger — Oates warned of stiff competition — with a buffet dinner.
What’s more, different individuals have won the tournament every year, so anyone has the chance to leave with a prize, Oates said. Cash prizes, a 2017 red two-door Chevrolet Camaro coupe, a five-day carnival cruise, Tour Edge drivers and a three-day, two-night stay at Treetops Resort await this year’s winners.
To register or for more information, phone the club at 360-457-6501.
Quilt raffle winners will also be announced at the tournament. Raffle tickets can be purchased for $5 each or three for $10. The handmade quilt features a whole lot of pink, enough to cover a queen-size bed or a king topper.
All proceeds from the campaign will benefit Operation Uplift, a volunteer organization founded in 1983 that provides wigs, turbans, scarves, prostheses, gas cards, financial support, a 24/7 help line and other services to cancer patients on the North Olympic Peninsula. The group started 34 years ago to support breast cancer survivors but now supports survivors of all types of cancer.
Soroptimists hope to raise about $25,000 to $30,000 this year, Oates said. Last year, the campaign raised between $45,000 and $47,000.
Declining club membership means Soroptimist International of Port Angeles-Noon Club could not organize all the fundraisers it’s been able to in the past, Oates said.
The largest Pink Up fundraiser, the spaghetti feed, did not come to fruition this year.
