Pink ribbons to adorn businesses for Pink Up Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Soroptimist International of Port Angeles, Noon Club members will tie pink ribbons all over downtown Saturday to kick off Pink Up Port Angeles.

Events are planned this Saturday and next Friday, June 22.

Proceeds from the annual fundraiser will go to Operation Uplift, a nonprofit organization that supports cancer patients on the North Olympic Peninsula. Last year, the week-long fundraiser drew $12,506 in donations.

Since 2005, the group has raised more than $312,000, said Wendy Shea, Soroptimist member. All money has gone to Operation Uplift.

Funds stay local

“It all stays local for people battling all kinds of cancer,” Shea said.

Pink ribbons will be tied onto the facades of businesses on Railroad Avenue and on Front, First, Oak, Laurel and Lincoln streets.

Also planned this Saturday is a bake sale at Swain’s General Store, 602 E. First St., which will begin at 10 a.m., and a Mobile Breast Health Clinic. The free clinic will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. To make a reservation, call 360-457-5141.

The Port Angeles City Council on Tuesday proclaimed that the name of the town would be Pink Angeles during the fundraiser.

Quilt raffle

Last Saturday, a handmade quilt, the prize for the Pink Up raffle, was on display at the farmers market. Tickets are $5 each or $10 for three tickets. The drawing will be June 22 at the reception for the golf tournament.

Golfers will tee off for the tournament at noon at the Peninsula Golf Club, 824 S. Lindberg Road. The reception will begin at 5 p.m.

Prizes will include a hole-in-one prize on the 17th hole of a 2018 Chevrolet Colorado donated by the Mac Ruddell Community Fund through Ruddell Auto Mall. A 50-50 drawing also is planned.

Operation Uplift, a volunteer organization founded in 1983, provides wigs, turbans, scarves, prostheses, gas cards, financial support, a 24/7 help line and other services to cancer patients on the Peninsula.

The group started 34 years ago to support breast cancer survivors but now supports survivors of all types of cancer.
