Pink ribbons raise awareness in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Downtown turned a shade of pink this weekend.

The Soroptimist International Port Angeles decked the downtown in pink ribbons to raise awareness of the Pink Up Port Angeles week, which began Saturday.

A free clinic Saturday saw 15 women for breast exams.

“Of those, one of them we found a lump, and 10 others will have mammograms for various reasons,” Linda deBord, chairwoman of the event, said.

“So in all, our clinic helped 11 different women.

“Every event we do all week will have information on cancers — not just breast cancer but many other kinds of cancer as well.”

Events throughout week

The events, which will continue throughout the week, are to raise cancer awareness and funds for Operation Uplift, deBord said, referring to a county nonprofit group that supports cancer survivors.

Today, a bake sale and a sale of pink goods will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Swain’s, 602 E. First St., in Port Angeles.

A bluegrass benefit will be Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Elk’s Club for a $5 donation.

“Everything we get will go to Operation Uplift,” deBord said.

The group will head to City Pier for the Pink Takeover on Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. to tie pink ribbons on the pier, listen to the Concert at the Pier and sell the pink goods.

Chestnut Cottage is the next site for takeover Thursday for a Spaghetti Dinner served by “Port Angeles Celebrities.”

A $10 donation will get spaghetti, salad, garlic bread and coffee, tea or soda to drink.

“It will be a wonderful good time,” deBord said.

“We’ll have some wonderful people serving dinner, and First Federal has been generous in being a sponsor for the event.”

On Friday, a banquet and auction at the Red Lion will cost $30 per ticket.

Cocktails will be served 6:30 p.m. and dinner at 7:30 p.m.

“I really think the auction has the potential to raise a lot of money for this group,” she said.

The golf tournament, now in its fourth year, is the only event that has taken place in past years, deBord said.

“The golf tournament is always a wonderful source of raising funds for us,” deBord said.

A dance at the Elk’s Club will wrap up the events at 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. for a $5 cover charge, with Fat Chance providing the musical entertainment, deBord said.

Operation Uplift offers breast health clinics and helps with prostheses, wigs, scarves and care packages.

It has been in existence since 1983.

“This year, the Susan G. Koman for the Cure had to cut back on their funding for Operation Uplift by about $40,000,” deBord said.

“Because it is a small organization, it is a huge blow to them.

“They provide this very important service to the community, so we felt it would be important to help them.”

She said her goal is to raise $25,000 throughout the week.

“I think that is an attainable number, and it will be a huge help to the group,” she said.
